39-Foot Jointed Rail

Many short line and regional railroads, and Class I brach lines have 39 foot jointed rail. This is very prone to bolt hole fractures, resulting in total seperation, because of the poor track geometry. Irregular cross-level, deteriorated ties, missing tie plates and rail anchors, lack of ballast under the joints create situations that make broken rails more common.
